LUCAMA, NC – Racing fans will feel a sense of nostalgia during Saturday night’s Dog Days Clash when the Southern Ground Pounders come roaring to life and when the Street Stock division returns to Southern National Motorsports Park.
The Southern Ground Pounders Vintage Racing Club, which was originally set to visit Southern National back in May, will bring two classes of vintage racecars with them – Vintage Sportsman and Vintage Modifieds.
“I’m very excited to go back to Southern National Motorsports Park,” Southern Ground Pounders Vintage Racing Club president Mack Tatum said. “Good relationship with those guys. I’ve worked well with both Langley Austin and Michael Diaz so we’re very excited to go back. Most of my guys love the racetrack. We’re really happy to be there. It’s fast. It’s forgiving on our cars. We should have a good field of cars there. We should have about 15 cars.”
While the racing program will be headlined by twin Late Model feature races, it’s not uncommon at regional tracks for the Southern Ground Pounders to be the highlight of the racing program in the minds of the fans who attend.
“We want to be the best race at the track,” Tatum remarked. “We love showing up with 10 or 15 cars and having more cars than the feature division at some place. That’s not a slam against any racetrack. It happens sometimes. We don’t get paid a penny to race. We’re here for pit passes and we race and have fun and I guarantee if you like racing and having a vintage racecar, you would enjoy being a part of this group.”
The Street Stock division is also returning to Southern National for a 75-lap, $750-to-win, $75-to-start feature race under the rules of Ron Barfield’s Mid-Atlantic Street Stock Championship Series. The Street Stock cars often have a vintage look of their own with the bodies of the cars often being bodies of 1970s and 1980s era muscle cars.
“Between the Street Stocks and the Southern Ground Pounders, Saturday night’s races are going to be a delight for race fans old and new,” track promoter Langley Austin said. “The old fans will definitely get a feeling of nostalgia during the races because these are the cars many of them watched racing when they were growing up while newer fans will be entertained not just because of the racing but because they’ll be immersed by the history.”
The Southern Ground Pounders and the Street Stocks join a full card for Saturday night’s racing program which includes twin $1,000-to-win Late Model features as well as feature races for the Chargers, Legends, U-CARs, Stingers and Bandoleros. Gates open at 4pm and racing starts at 7pm.
