LUCAMA, NC – Summer is in the air and, as the weather gets hotter, so will the racing at Southern National Motorsports Park in Lucama, North Carolina.
Saturday night, Southern National will kick summer into high gear with the Summer KickOff presented by Bridgestone. The race will be the first NASCAR Whelen All-American Series race at Southern National Motorsports Park since Matt McCall’s thrilling victory in the Jerry Moody Memorial back on May 17th, a race that generated headlines on NASCAR.com and NBC Sports.
The Late Model action promises to be as intense as it has been all year with track regulars such as Bradley McCaskill, Rusty Daniels, Ronald Renfrow and Jonathan Findley, among others, joining potential newcomers in their pursuit of a track championship and a NASCAR Whelen All-American Series state championship. McCaskill is looking to rebound from recent struggles at other nearby tracks while Rusty Daniels, fresh off a second place finish on Saturday night at East Carolina, looks to build on his momentum.
Southern National Motorsports Park is the only track in the region where the Late Model division has yet to see a repeat winner.
Bradley McCaskill, Andrew Grady and Matt McCall have won races while Ronald Renfrow, Jonathan Findley and Rusty Daniels have all challenged for wins this season. Heading into Saturday night’s twin races, the odds are looking good for a fourth and fifth different winner and possibly a first career Late Model victory for Findley or Renfrow.
The Late Models are not the only division delivering drama in Lucama. Tyler Horne, Travis Miller and Joseph Pittman find themselves in a tight three way championship battle in the U-CAR division while Brandon Allen, James Stroud, Lee Horner and John Ordiway are all lurking.
The Legends division currently finds Will Bristle in the point lead while Paul Williamson leads in the Charger division, but Williamson may quickly have a challenge in that division championship from Travis Green.
In the Bandolero division, Kade Lambert, Josh Kossek and Kailey Murray have finished on the podium in both races run this season and look to continue their strong runs, but Ethan Johnson and Savannah Beasley both threaten to be contenders on Saturday night.
Along with the Late Model, Charger, Legends, U-CAR and Bandolero divisions, the Virginia Mini Cups and Piedmont Mini Cups will bring their cars, which are scaled down versions of NASCAR racecars, to Southern National Motorsports Park.
Make plans to visit Southern National Motorsports Park for Saturday night’s Summer KickOff. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students (with ID) and active/retired military (with ID), $6 for kids ages 6-12 and kids five and under admitted free. Gates open at 5pm with green flag racing at 7pm.
