LUCAMA, NC – During the week, Jeremy Bohne is enforcing laws but, on weekends, he’s running wide open.
Bohne, 30, from Wilson, North Carolina, is a Deputy at the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office. He also competes in the Charger division at Southern National Motorsports Park, where he currently leads the points.
While Bohne is dedicated to protecting the community, both his job and his hobby can be perceived as dangerous.
“It’s a little different,” Bohne said. “People say, I guess, I like the adrenaline. I do a little dangerous job and then I like to come out and have fun during the weekend and run racecars. Really, we just come out and try to come out and enforce the laws and stay safe is the main thing.”
Bohne is one of the more popular drivers at Southern National Motorsports Park. Many fans who live in the area know he is a law enforcement officer and each race, a strong contingent of fans cheer him on. Along with his loyal fanbase, some of his friends at the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office also come out to the track to support him.
“I have a few who come out and watch,” Bohne commented. “I believe mostly everybody here knows, considering I’m a deputy in Wilson County. We’re in Wilson County so I believe most everybody knows that I am a deputy here.”
The current climate is sometimes hostile for law enforcement officers. In recent years, police officers have been the subject of heated protests and increasingly been targeted in of acts of violence. Despite that, respect and support for law enforcement is strong in the auto racing community.
“Now days, the way times are now, it’s great to see fans and people in general who support law enforcement still,” Bohne remarked.
At the track, Jeremy Bohne is enjoying a very successful 2017 season. He currently has a two point lead over Jonathan Kornegay in the Charger division standings and picked up a win in the most recent race for the division on April 8th. (The Charger feature race on April 22nd was rained out).
“We had a really good car that week,” Bohne explained. “The car stayed consistent the entire race. Right now, we’re leading the points and that’s my goal this year, to win the championship. So far, the car’s pretty fast so I’m going to leave it like it is. Hopefully we can come back and put on a good performance like we did the last race.”
While he is content with the speed of the car now, he knows he will have to keep up with it throughout the season as he faces challenges from tough competition, such as Brian Obiedzenski, Johnathan Kornegay, Michael O’Brien and Wayne Goss, among others.
“Yeah, everybody’s picked it up and I believe they’re just going to get faster and faster so we’re eventually going to have to do our homework and see what’s going to happen,” Bohne stated. “I think there’s going to be some really good racing and good competition in the Charger division.”
Jeremy Bohne will be back behind the cockpit of his black and orange no. 72 racecar, which is sponsored by Three Aces Speed Shop and Rouse Racing Engines, in the 35 lap Charger feature at the Remember the Fallen 225 on Saturday, May 27th. The Memorial Day Weekend race will also feature twin races for the Late Model division as well as racing or Mini Stocks, U-CARs, Legends and Bandoleros.
