LUCAMA, NC – It’s time to shine for the Charger drivers at Southern National Motorsports Park.
Entering Saturday night’s twin races, Michael O’Brien and Paul Williamson are tied for first place in the championship standings, only seven points ahead of Tom Sauls and eight points ahead of Alton Coombs. With the 2015 season heading for the homestretch, the urgency has picked up and Saturday night’s races will be the most important races all season so far for the Charger division.
Michael O’Brien has won three races in 2015, but momentum is on Paul Williamson’s side. Williamson scored his first career win in the most recent Charger race at Southern National, which was run on August 1st. Tom Sauls and Al Coombs are winless on the season, but both drivers have scored third place finishes this season. Behind those four, Nicholas Fulgham, who finished second on August 1st, is quietly lurking 12 points out of the championship lead.
“Saturday night is going to be pretty important having two races,” points leader O’Brien said about the importance of Saturday night. “We’re tied for the points. We’ve got to hope that we have good luck on our side this weekend. These two races will be the most important races of the year. One bad race, we could have something go wrong and be gone from it. We’ll have to race smart but also race good and be there at the end and hopefully come out with two wins.”
Along with the points implications, additional money is on the line with the opportunity for drivers to bring home as much as $700 in winnings for their efforts. The bonuses in the Charger division include an additional $200 to any driver who sweeps both races or, if nobody does sweep, $100 to the driver with the best combined average finish in the two races.
Michael O’Brien has added incentive to win as well. His sponsor, H&H Motorsports and Construction Managers, is sponsoring Saturday night’s Wounded Warriors Night at the Races which will honor servicemen and servicewomen wounded in combat in past and present wars. O’Brien’s car sports a Wounded Warriors Project decal every race.
The race is headlined by the Mid-Atlantic Street Stock Championship Series which will draw Street Stock cars from all over the region. The NASCAR WHELEN All-American Series Late Models will also be in action along with the U-CAR division and the Legends and Bandolero divisions.
Racing starts at 7pm. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6-12 and kids five and under are admitted free.
