LUCAMA, NC – All the action was in Matt Cox’s rear-view mirror.
A 50 lap Late Model Stock Car race, which headlined Engine Builder Night at Southern National Motorsports Park, turned into a marathon after two stoppages. When the proverbial dust settled, Cox was able to drive away from the field to score his second win of Speed Week 2026.
“We were on the right end tonight,” Cox said. “We started on the pole, was able to stay out front, lead all the laps tonight and keep everything behind us. We had a good racecar and was able to kind of jump out there, get a little lead, manage gaps and just had a really good piece. We’ve been working hard while we’ve been here this week and we got two wins now. Worst finish is third. And we got a big points lead in this deal and we’ll keep plugging at it. We’ve got a 100 lapper tomorrow so we’ll see if we can’t go three in a row and win that 100 lapper and finish the week off.”
The most notable incident took place when Wyatt Miller dived to the inside of Matthew Laprade heading into turn three on lap 31. The two drivers tangled, ending Laprade’s night. On the ensuing restart, Atley Weise would get tangled up in the same corner after an incident with Alex Fleming. Miller was able to rejoin the race, finishing eighth.
Rusty Daniels once again dominated in the KONI Charger division to take the victory over Bradley McCaskill, his second straight win in 2026. Finishing in third was Aiden McConnaughey, who rallied from eighth to third in the closing laps.
“We just raced,” Daniels said. “We were pretty flat out, both of us. I had a really good car. He had a really good car. He could touch me about any time he wanted to but we got away from him there two or three car-lengths and kept him there the last six laps. Just can’t thank everybody enough that helps us on this thing man.”
Spencer Bradshaw took the victory in the Legends division after Ryan Zima’s win was disallowed following postrace technical inspection. Andrew Watson prevailed over Bradley Morgan in an Any Car thriller. The Mini Stock victory went to Robert Arch, and Paxton Smith kept his undefeated streak alive in Bandolero.
Speed Week 2026 concludes on Saturday with Late Models, Chargers, Legends, Bandoleros, Mini Stocks, Any Cars, and the season opener for the Allison Legacy Race Series. The green flag for The Sign Shop Championship Day at Speed Week will wave at 6pm.
