Southern National Motorsports Park

June 8th Race Rescheduled to Sunday June 23rd; August Doubleheader Added

Story From RACE22.com

Southern National Motorsports Park was scheduled to debut their new $150 entry fee program for the Late Model Stock Cars this weekend but expected weather has forced them to postpone the event.

This is the second time the program has been postponed due to weather and with the short schedule already anticipated for this season, it’s left track officials scrambling for a suitable makeup date.

“We just can’t catch a break when it comes to weather,” said track owner Michael Diaz. “We were looking like a great field of cars this weekend but there’s not much you can with an 80-100% forecast depending on where you look. Not even one forecast shows any glimmer of hope.”

Diaz worked with NASCAR Whelen All-American Series officials today to get two makeup dates approved for the two races that have been canceled already this year.  The first of which will take place on Sunday, June 23rd. The opportunity to run the race on a Sunday with no other tracks competing could help bolster car counts even more.

“Once we saw the forecast, we started looking around for a makeup date because our guys haven’t raced since April 20th,” Diaz continued. “Sunday’s were about all that was left for us to not compete head to head with our closest tracks and not to step on any of the bigger Late Model races around the region.”

In addition to the makeup race on June 23rd, the track will have a doubleheader on August 17-18th with NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National and North Carolina State points on the line as well as track points. Drivers running on June 23rd will also have the chance to compete for the track championship despite missing the season opener back in April as the track allows for two dropped races and they’ve only run two races so far this season.

“I think June 23rd will be a good date for all the guys who want to race with us and it’ll be a great chance for drivers that have already had a bad season somewhere else or didn’t get the start they wanted to come here and compete for a NASCAR division one championship. Plus the late season doubleheader is on a weekend when almost no one else races and gives points chasers somewhere to run four races in one weekend for points with twins each night.”

With many of this regions racers at the top of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National points standings and with many of the areas top racers competing for North Carolina State points as well, these Sunday makeup races add even more incentive for racers to compete at Southern National Motorsports Park. And, that’s in addition to the already incredible low priced $150 entry fee for Late Models which includes two new and two scuff tires as well as four pit passes per team.
